the sheila maid ceiling airer from Britain, based on the winsome vintage Victorian design ‘Original Curved Shape’ of the cast iron cross girders, and which has endured as an iconic, charismatic model of old fashioned sense and sensibility for over a century. The Sheila Maid is a traditional British laundry drying rack which is suspended from the ceiling, with a tidy and modest appearance, and raised and lowered by a simple rope and pulley system. This clever device makes efficient and resourceful use of naturally rising warm air that collects in the unused ceiling space of our heated homes, thereby drying laundry with no extra energy {CO2}, cost or fuss; a tried and true innovation of domestic science. The traditional ‘ceiling airer’ was a standard feature in British homes a century ago, and still prevails as a prudent, practical and reliable utility alternative to the costly electric tumble dryer. Natural pine wood rails {4} from well-managed Scandinavian forests*. Solid, clear lacquered cast iron cross girders {2}, single and double pulleys {1 each} and cleat hook. Natural jute rope {10m}. Length 1.45m, width 38cm, height 15cm, weight 2kg. Maximum load 8 kg {via ceiling joists or beams}. Instructions included.

The Wedge Axe perfectly combines the simple and practical technology of a forged wedge and hefty striking bar. Solid steel with rubber grips. Weight 5.5kg, length {closed/extended} 105/155cm. the logmatic splitting basket completes the Finnish Logmatic wood splitting system. Used in conjunction with the Wedge Axe, the Splitting Basket securely supports several logs at once for splitting, and then functions as a smart log carrier, and log basket, at your fireside. This further adds to the ease of splitting firewood as there is no need to stoop down and collect the pieces of firewood to carry into the house or the woodshed. Robust steel and plywood construction provides a stable and level splitting support. Height 33cm, weight 3.7kg, diameter 37cm. Assembly required. This item ships separately - click here.

starry starry night … from Britain, a quirky, inspiring alternative to the ubiquitous gift certificate and lasting infinitely longer than a box of chocolates. Encourages observation of the night sky and visits to the planetarium. Naming a star is a symbolic gesture; stargazers have given celestial objects countless names in every language throughout human history. The sleek reusable tin contains details of one unnamed star, its official catalogue number and coordinates, a star chart and guide to locating this star. It’s up to you to name it what you wish. Simple instructions for star name registration are included and a certificate will be sent in confirmation. The *Star Register is periodically submitted to the British Library. Metal tin 23cm x 16cm x 3cm.
2009 is the International Year of Astronomy and the 400th anniversary of the astronomical telescope first used by Galileo.
5% of profits are donated to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind to support research in the field of vision health.
*Very similar to popular ‘adopt a star’ programs of Canadian institutions such as Queen’s University Observatory and the Edmonton Space & Science Foundation, set up for fundraising and with their own private star registries. But, not even popular educational programs or engaging gifts can overrule the world’s official star naming authority, the International Astronomical Union, which assigns and identifies all celestial objects only by catalogue number for scientific purposes {as provided in the Name a Star kit}. In very special cases, the IAU assigns a name to a celestial object, such as Sedna, the newly discovered planet named after the Inuit goddess of the sea {the IAU is also responsible for demoting the status of poor old Pluto}.

a very unlikely honey from the island of Newfoundland. Despite long, harsh winters and extremely short foraging seasons of this isolated North Atlantic island, its rugged Boreal Forest landscape of pristine mountains, barrens and bogs - hardy honeybees happily produce this Wildflower Honey. Such an environment won’t typically support honeybees - in fact they weren’t introduced to Newfoundland until 1927, and with little success. Nevertheless, this Apiary was founded in 1973 with one colony and, against the odds, it is thriving. Newfoundland is the last place in North America to have naturally healthy pest-free bees, thus, absolutely no pesticides or chemicals are needed or used in the hives. But limited production and local demand mean that this unusual, ultra pure Wildflower Honey is not commonly found beyond the shores of the island. Glass jar, weight 140g.
5% of profits are donated to the Save Our Bees campaign of the Canadian Honey Council for urgent action in preventing the sudden and critical loss of honeybees.
